There are journalists [The New Yorker, The New Maverick - one of the few intelligent periodicals here - who say that Assange has gone 'too far'.] As a child I saw a drawing of a fey Florence Nightingale, meekly holding a lamp. The reality is that she was a loud battleaxe - how else could she have transformed the appalling hospital conditions? A revolution which plays by the rules of the ancien régime, will, by its nature fail.
The printing press meant that the masses had access to information and knowledge. Empowerment. Suffrage for the working classes, and then to women followed.
Where would you or I be, had there been no books?
What is happening on the Internet is a revolution on the scale – for it isn't located to a place or country – that the world has never seen. There will be more Assanges, Wikileaks. The secret worlds within which politicians, diplomats operate, within which wars are fought, are being ripped wide open.
A giant step towards a greater democracy.
